Geocent continues to provide a variety of aerospace and systems engineering functions for NASA flight programs including Ares I, Ares I Upper Stage, Ares I-X, the International Space Station (ISS), and the newest Space Launch System (SLS). In addition to its engineering responsibilities, Geocent has also provided specific IT related activities for these programs that included: requirements development for computer-to-remote terminal-to-sensor data, correlating user data input with SQL Server databases, integrating control documents, and gathering contractor estimates.

Ares I, Ares I Upper Stage, and Ares I-X
Geocent has developed valid requirements at the vehicle integration level and decomposed those requirements for the vehicle element. Our requirements development responsibilities extended to system and subsystem-level requirements and continued with determining and maintaining compliance with the requirements throughout construction.
As part of systems engineering, Geocent personnel have worked as members of the vehicle requirements and verification teams. Geocent developed or improved verification procedures and processes for specific vehicle components and tracked the closure of verification artifacts submitted by sub-contractors. We made certain that all requirements were closed prior to flight.
Geocent has performed interface development from a component-to-component level up to and including vehicle element-to-element interface connections. Our interface work has included technical negotiations covering structures, thermals, hydraulics, avionics, mechanisms, and cryogenic engineering details. Geocent processed vehicle command and measurement data (collected from data providers) and stored it in a SQL Server database. We coordinated the proper data flow through interfaces adhering to the MIL-STB-1553B and RS422 standards and using gigabit Ethernet buses.
Geocent has participated in the development of precision mechanical and aerospace designs. We contributed to the development of the Ares I manufacturing tools and its Avionics Box Flight Isolation system, and we were a mechanical integrator on the Ares I Upper Stage project. Geocent acted as lead design engineer for the development of structural support fixtures for Ares I Rockets and 1st Stage Avionics supporting the special integrated test facility/special integrated lab (SITF/SIL).
International Space Station
Geocent is providing lead systems engineering guidance on the International Space Station’s Microgravity Science Glovebox updates. This includes:
Planning and scheduling development activities;
Coordinating design review events;
Overseeing the procurement and manufacturing operations;
Coordinating the verification testing/demonstration/analysis/inspection processes; and
Delivering the product to the customer.
These tasks cover air filtration, environment isolation, microbial decontamination, and video system control technologies. Our participation in this number of different engineering disciplines demonstrates Geocent’s flexibility and range of experience in aerospace technology.
Geocent also performed a variety of software development services for the space station’s Payload Planning System (PPS) including:
Consolidation of a variety of servers to Intel servers (Linux and various other operating systems);
Implementation of a multi-tier distributed architecture; and
Development of user configurations, system configurations, FTP sites, the payload plan data model, and rack address configurations (each payload is in a rack on the ISS and NASA monitors a payload's status through its address).
Geocent supported the station’s Payload Information Management System (PIMS) through a Sun-to-Intel server migration and served as the Tier 3 help desk. Also for PIMS, we performed document management, provided user information, performed file transfer and storage, provided project management overall, and developed requirements, software, and the documentation for processing change requests. Furthermore, Geocent supported software installation, testing, maintenance, training, and user follow-up surveys.
Space Launch System
Geocent is providing engineering support to the SLS Core Stage liquid hydrogen and oxygen tank manufacturing and assembly group and to the SLS Core Stage Main Propulsion System (MPS) and Thrust Vector Control (TVC) group. Geocent engineers are involved in the identification and management of program/team risks, opportunities, and issues related to all aspects of the manufacturing, assembly, and operations process. In addition, Geocent personnel are:
Designing welding and handling fixtures for tank production;
Developing process instructions and procedures for tank weld development and pre-production activities;
Performing systems engineering and integration (SE&I) for both the manufacturing team and the vehicle stages SE&I team; and
Performing project management activities associated with the SLS manufacturing process, bill of materials, and testing.
